We will show you inexpensive, yet sturdy approaches to all of your storage problems. All you have to do is use the page-links in the Table of Contents near the bottom of this page to find the subject category you are seeking.

Garage Storage Plan

The plan at the left is a typical 24' x 24'- 2 car structure with a single 16' wide overhead door at one end and a 3' wide man door near the other end. The Car Parking Zone is shown with beige shading and the Workbench Zone with blue shading. The main areas for storage are always along the side walls and just below the ceiling.

On one sidewall is shown where the lawnmower could sit and behind it is a 8' long wall hanging rack that garden tools can be hung from. On the opposite sidewall are two multi-shelved storage racks that are each 8' long. One is 16" deep and the other is 12" deep. These can be up to four shelves in height with the first shelf sitting about 2' above the floor and 16" clearance between the other shelves.

Overhead Garage Storage

Further back near the Workbench Zone are two 2' x 8' single shelf storage racks mounted to the ceiling structure, a sample of which is shown above and to the right. These should sit with a minimum clearance height between the floor and the bottom of the rack structure of 7'-0". These racks must attach to the elements of the ceiling structure. Their storage purpose is to get less used items up off the floor such as fishing rods, hunting gear, lumber and other items you don't need to reach on a daily or weekly basis. The metal ceiling rack system can be purchased in nearly any size you desire and most are available as modular units.

I was pleased that I was able to easily find the proper tall storage cabinet for my garage. I needed lockable storage to keep my toddler away from sharp tools and solvents that my husband stores. Garagetips-101 solved my problem!

I love the detail in your garage building pages. They helped me understand how to engineer a foundation for a garage we are planning that our building department will approve. I had the inspector go to your pages and review what I was talking about. Now, I am studying the wall framing sections, as we plan to build it ourselves this fall. Thank you so much for the great information.

Great stuff on wall framing. I never really understood the on-and-off spacing concepts for the wall studs until I read your explanations.
